Isle of Syke May 2009
" Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing ...
Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye ...
Charlie will come again"
Skye Boat Song serenades the tale of Bonnie Prince Charlie's escape to Skye, assisted by Flora MacDonald, after his defeat at Culloden in 1746. Although it is still possible to take a ferry from Mallaig to Skye, since 1995, most people have been using the road bridge, Skye Bridge, to cross over Lochalsh from Kyle of Lochalsh, where this picture was taken. I was told by a local gentleman that an expensive toll was charged using the Skye Bridge by Bank of America, who financed building the bridge, for ten years until it was abolished due to the locals' campaign. Thanks to Tim, I had a go of another Skye's speciality, Talisker, a single malt whisky notable for its peaty taste.
